Memory of Materials: Chiharu Shiota & Yin Xiuzhen
A panel conversation with curators, writers and scholars unravels the worlds of artists Chiharu Shiota and Yin Xiuzhen, both showing at the Hayward Gallery.
To celebrate the artists’ exhibitions, a lively discussion finds common threads in Chiharu Shiota and Yin Xiuzhen’s practices, such as the preservation of memory, materiality and migration in their respective work.
This panel brings together Assistant Curator of Chiharu Shiota: Threads of Life Suzanna Petot with art historian and curator Lydia Yee, moderated by academic, critic and broadcaster Shahidha Bari.
Chiharu Shiota: Threads of Life and Yin Xiuzhen: Heart to Heart are on view at the Hayward Gallery from Tuesday 17 February to Sunday 3 May, and you can access both exhibitions with a single ticket.
Chiharu Shiota: Threads of Life features the artist’s immense and intricate web-like installations, exploring the body, memory, consciousness and the fragility of existence.
Yin Xiuzhen: Heart to Heart invites you to see the familiar in new ways, as artworks made from unconventional materials and overlooked objects reveal personal and collective stories.
