London Line-Up
London’s youth music groups celebrate their communities with new work and exciting collaborations from jazz and beyond.
Five outstanding youth music ensembles from across London have been asked to tell the stories of what makes their community special – whether that’s the people, geography or cultural/historical features that form their community or area.
Many of the groups have formed new partnerships or artistic collaborations and are presenting brand-new music written for this performance.
Schedule
12 noon – 12.45pm: Impossibilities, Guildhall School of Music and Drama
ImPossibilities create a sonic amalgam of free jazz, spiritual sounds, roots and folkloric music, hip-hop, nu-soul, spoken word, groove and abstraction. For this performance, Impossibilities have composed a new set on the theme of ‘Sound of Resilience’, looking at how young people view resilience given the challenges they face in times of unrest. The work is composed through whole band improvisation and individual commissions.
1.30pm – 2.15pm: Wired4Music
A line-up of 16 – 25 year-old artists from across London, with a focus on underrepresented voices. Artists have been selected to work with a Wired4Music live house band to evolve their songs into fully arranged live performances. A team of young event producers have produced this project and performance to give them hands-on experience on a live event.
3pm – 3.45pm: JMI Youth Big Band
The JMI Youth Big Band’s performance blends jazz with the rich musical traditions of North African and Andalusian Jewish communities, and features a special collaboration with renowned UK cellist and composer Shirley Smart, whose decade in the Middle East deeply shaped her music. JMI YBB Artistic Director Sam Eastmond brings his own original compositions and bold arrangements, creating a fresh and exciting fusion of ancient traditions and modern jazz energy.
4.30pm – 5.15pm: Tomorrow’s Warriors Youth Ensemble
An exciting new line-up of musicians aged 15 – 19, featuring some of the most promising musicians on Tomorrow’s Warriors’ award-winning Young Artist Development Programme, takes to the stage. The band have been closely mentored by Rosie Turton, one of the finest trombonists on the London scene, and Denys Baptiste, Mercury award nominated saxophonist.
6pm – 7pm: Roundhouse Resident Artists
The Roundhouse’s Resident Artist programme supports the professional development of exceptional emerging artists on the path to forging sustainable artistic careers. This event features performances from Hana Amaya, Holden, NIA, TOBITHEFREAK and YAZ.
