Smith’s memoir Bread of Angels describes her post-Second World War childhood in a condemned housing complex in Philadelphia and her teenage years in New Jersey (where her quest for artistic purity takes hold), all the way through to her emergence as a punk-rock icon with her seminal album, Horses.
At the peak of her creative powers, Smith and her beloved Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith chose a life outside of the public eye to start a family on Lake St. Clair, Michigan. When Smith suffered profound loss, writing remained her companion on a lifelong journey driven by artistic freedom.
Patti Smith is one of the captivating writers at work today on the craft of writing, the healing potential of art and the power of artistic freedom.

On Level 2 of our Royal Festival Hall you can grab a slice of life by the Thames with drinks and freshly made pizza at our Festival Bar & Kitchen which opens out onto our Riverside Terrace. You can grab a coffee and a slice of freshly made cake from our Ballroom Cafe. Or alternatively enjoy destination dining in the restaurant at Skylon.
