Courtney May Robertson: HUNTER
Inspired by horror, BDSM and melodrama, this show transforms the grotesque, sexual perversion and excess into triumphant symbols of bodily autonomy and empowerment.
HUNTER plays with the redemptive process of a classic tragedy, in which a character comes to insight through suffering. With an industrial soundscape composed by Acidic Male, it embraces self-destruction as an act of self-preservation.
In this tragedy, performer and choreographer Courtney May Robertson performs ‘life-affirming monstrosities’ on herself and her life-size doppelganger. The duo – one flesh and blood, the other made of foam and silicone – portray the internal torments and ecstasies of an individual in conflict with a society that holds purity as its moral standard.
Let yourself be transported to a space where the dichotomy between repulsion and attraction dissolves. Robertson believes that when shame is overcome, the emotion of disgust, usually associated with aversion, has the ability to transform into paradoxical intrigue.
As Robertson says: ‘At its core, HUNTER is about dangerously obsessive desire. The kind of intoxicating desire that grabs you by the throat, pins you down, and takes your life; and you let it destroy you while you savour every second.’
Courtney May Robertson (born in Scotland, 1992) is a performer and interdisciplinary maker based in Rotterdam. Since 2013, she has worked with a number of leading European choreographers including Jan Martens and Florentina Holzinger.
HUNTER was awarded the VSCD Mime/Performance Prize at the Nederlands Theater Festival. The London presentation of HUNTER is generously supported by the Performing Arts Fund NL.
