Chunky Move: 4/4

Eight dancers perform a symphony of mesmerising movement in Antony Hamilton’s blueprint for choreographic precision and physical endurance.

The UK premiere of this utterly distinct work from one of Australia’s leading companies pushes the boundaries of contemporary dance. As episode after episode builds upon the last, quartets and duets converge and diverge in ever more hypnotic configurations, in a performance that balances unity and individuality.

With backgrounds in krump, freestyle hip-hop, house and contemporary dance techniques, the diversity in the dancers’ artistic backgrounds, coupled with Hamilton’s striking craftsmanship, highlights a uniquely Australian performance.

Founded in the mid-1990s, Chunky Move has made a mark on the choreographic landscape with its provocative, innovative style and intensely physical dance. Run by Antony Hamilton and Kristy Ayre since 2018, the company continues to create visually impactful pieces as much through the gestures as their stage designs.

Chunky Move is supported by the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria. Chunky Move is assisted by the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its principal arts investment and advisory body; and by the City of Melbourne.
