Chineke! Orchestra: Hailstork + After Dark
Journey from vibrant chamber suites to Adolphus Hailstork’s uplifting First Symphony, with Plínio Fernandes as the soloist in Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez.
Step into the vibrant world of Igor Stravinsky, one of the 20th century’s most daring composers. His Suites Nos.1 and 2 for chamber orchestra are masterpieces of rhythm, colour and orchestral texture.
Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez was inspired by the fountains and gardens of the palace of Aranjuez. São Paulo-born guitarist Plínio Fernandes joins the orchestra for this cornerstone of the classical guitar concerto repertoire.
Eliana Echeverry’s Suite Arrullos sinfónicos from Diez lunas para una espera (Ten Moons for Waiting) pays homage to motherhood and the ancestral wisdom of the midwives of the Colombian Pacific coast, who conceive of pregnancy as a ten-moon process. Each movement of the score evokes one of these stages.
We close with the First Symphony by Adolphus Hailstork, one of the most celebrated living composers in the US. Originally commissioned for a summer music festival, the work takes you on a journey from contemplative introspection to vibrant celebration.
