Adam Buxton: I Love You, Byeee
The writer and comedian speaks to journalist Miranda Sawyer about his memoir on growing up, growing old and figuring it all out, with songs from his new album.
In I Love You, Byeee, Buxton explores the joys of comedy, and the book is cut through with many of his hilarious trademark asides, but it’s also remarkably tender and thoughtful.
It’s a memoir that doesn’t shy away from the difficulties of navigating adulthood, losing loved ones and working out how to be a parent.
Buxton also talks about his new album, Buckle Up, and performs a couple of songs live on stage with Michael Lovett of the Adam Buxton band. The album is a collection of 14 songs about everything from whether a middle-aged man should be wearing shorts, to accepting who and what you are.
With his ear for amusing instrumentation, as evidenced by decades of jingles for his shows, the songs are about more than they seem to be.
Miranda Sawyer is an English journalist and broadcaster. Besides her features and radio criticism for The Observer, her writing has appeared in GQ, Vogue and The Guardian. Her latest book, Uncommon People, was published in 2024.
