Matthew Barney on Redoubt
Influenced by the wilderness of Idaho, Redoubt represents ‘something of a portrait of place’ according to Matthew Barney
The exhibition, with its series of imposing and intricate sculptures, and electroplated copper plates, reveals a major new direction for the renowned artist and film-maker.
Integral to both the film and the sculptures of the exhibition is the transformation of materials, and in this video introduction to Redoubt, Barney explains how its large-scale sculptures were created; and how that process helped capture the energy of the forest fire-burned trees which inspired them.
‘This exhibition is as much about sculpture as it is about the film, and about merging that relationship between the narrative and the object’
